I stayed at Kampung Salang up in the North West of the Island
Tioman is a lovely tropical island. It has sultry weather, sandy beaches, warm clear water and coral reefs. There are rustic holiday resorts dotted around the coastline but there is no habitation inland. In fact the whole island shuts down in the monsoon season, it only re-opened at the beginning of March – just in time for me! The people are friendly, the food is good and the diving is excellent. It’s very popular with the locals with people as far away as Kuala Lumpur coming across for the weekend.
Some views of the island:
Yesterday I walked with Linn, Alan and Dominique from Kampung Salang through the jungle to Kampung Air Batung and then along the beach and promenade to the main village, Kampung Tekek. It was an interesting experience, a walk in the jungle is not a walk in the park. Apart from the dense vegetation, there are vines and roots to trip you up, thorns on most branches and leaves so when you trip and grab a handhold you get a surprise! We were attacked by a swarm of wasps as we walked past their nest causing much running, yelling and cursing and consternation for a while.
But we did come down into a beautiful uninhabited bay where we stopped for a dip. It was a long walk – 13 kms and 6 hours – although we did get lost for a while probably adding a kilometre and an hour to the totals. We then caught a water taxi back to Salang and were there in 20 mins!
Brilliant; think you are creating a large number of new tourists wanting to visit the area, though maybe not all will be quite as active on the road. 😉 Be well. Wm
Hope you and Ann have traveled safely and are settling in back home. all the best
A six hour yomp through the jungle, you write well Elred, I could feel the sticky jungle and the wasps from over here.
Wow El you’ll be able to do the iron man when you return. Looks absolutely idyllic. Hope you get to enjoy some restful hours on the beach. How accommodating of Pulau Tioman Island to open its season with your arrival!!!?
Hi Claire. It’s been fantastic. Last snorkel over the coral this afternoon then off on the bike to Keluang tomorrow
Elders, so enjoying following your journey. Looks like you’ve settled into it pretty quickly and are making the most of places and people. Enjoy!
Thanks Caroline. How’s your tour of Oz going? All the best
