Johor Bahru to Tioman Island

Navigating in and out of big cities is not fun. 25kms of morning traffic before I was in the countryside cycling to Kota Tinggi was nerve-wracking. The 45km ride there and the next day’s 92km ride to Mersing were pretty uneventful.  It was beautiful cycling through coconut plantations and jungle.  How do you know you’re in Malaysia?  The road kill comprises monitor lizards, monkeys, civets, tortoises, snakes and bright-plumed birds.  So sad.  On the bright side I did see to very large, very living monitor lizards.

I discovered , to my delight, the roadside stalls that sell fresh fruit juice in bags of ice. When you’re hot and dripping with sweat these little oases are a welcome relief.

I confess I also had a little nap 🙂

I found a place to stop and rest in a coconut plantation.  Thought you’d like to see the view.

Then from Mersing caught the ferry to Tioman Island.  It’s a 2 hour ride – about 30 nautical miles off the East coast
