Melaka – A World Heritage City

The rides from Mersing to Kluang and thence to Muar and Melaka were pretty unventful.  Some great cycling through jungle with signs warning of Elephants  and Tapirs crossing but that was not to be – probably a good thing as it is a very busy dual highway.  Between Muar and Melaka it is pretty and shady – such relief!

When Mo and I were first married and sailing on the Sugela carrying sugar from Durban to Japan we used to sail through the Malacca Straits.  I remember standing on the bridge wing looking at the lights of Melaka and saying, “one day I’ll be there”  It’s been 42 years. Here I am and I’m excited.

Some little known facts: (well, to me anyway):  Melaka was ruled by the Dutch for 183 years. It was the major trading hub between Europe and the Far East. For South Africans – Jan van Riebeek was governor here from 1662 to 1665. He died in 1667 in Batavia (now Jakarta).  His wife, Maria de la Quellerie died in Melaka at the age of 35 having given birth to 8 children.

Although the city is big and modern, the old centre has been preserved and is now a World Heritage Site.  I’m staying in the midst of this old part of town and I’ve enjoyed walking around exploring and absorbing the culture and history.  It has a very different atmosphere compared to the other Malaysian cities I’ve visited.

I’m staying in a backpacker/cyclepacker lodge called “Ringo’s Foyer” that is well known among travelers and very popular.  The owner, Howard, is a cyclist and a WarmShowers host who goes to great lengths to ensure everyone has a happy and safe stay.  He has certainly made me very welcome and offered some excellent advice for the next stage of my journey.  Cyclists get a discount on the room rate!

It is in the old centre of Melaka and close to Jonker Street.  It has been a really great place for me
